What to Expect on Your Colorado Driver’s Test

Earning your Colorado driver’s license is a big milestone — and we know the test can feel stressful, even for experienced drivers. Most people who take the test are safe, capable drivers…but nerves and forgotten habits can make a simple mistake feel much bigger than it is.

Whether you’re a new teen driver or an adult taking the test for the first time, here’s what examiners look for and how to give yourself the best chance to pass.

The Biggest Reason Drivers Fail: Rolling Stops

This is the #1 slip-up, even for people who have been driving for years.

Tip to Pass:

  • Come to a complete stop at every red light and stop sign.
  • You should feel the car settle — like you could safely shift into park — before moving again.
  • Pause long enough to show the examiner full control.
  • Remember: Bad habits = automatic point deductions.

Turn Into the Correct Lane

It sounds simple, but lane discipline is a major part of the test.

Tip to Pass:

  • When turning right or left, enter the closest lane available.
  • Only move into another lane after you’re fully through the turn.
  • In a double-turn lane, stay in your lane from start to finish.
  • The Goal: Show the examiner you understand traffic flow and stay in control.

Watch Your Speed

Neighborhood limits surprise many test takers. Confidence is key.

Tip to Pass:

  • The default speed in residential areas is 20 MPH unless posted otherwise.
  • If there’s no visible sign, assume 20 MPH.
  • Avoid driving too slowly; blocking traffic can also hurt your score.
  • The Goal: Maintain a steady, safe speed consistent with the road type.

Use Your Eyes — and Show It

Examiners want to see active scanning. Let them see your head moving.

Tip to Pass:

  • Check left and right at every single intersection.
  • Use your rearview mirror frequently to show awareness.
  • Make obvious glances to blind spots when changing lanes.
  • The Goal: Demonstrate that you are fully aware of your surroundings at all times.

Use Both Hands on the Wheel

Relaxed, one-handed cruising won’t cut it on the test.

Tip to Pass:

  • Use Hand-over-hand or the Grip-and-slide method.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel for maximum control during turns.
  • Critical Warning: One hand while turning is a likely fail.

Understand Right-of-Way

Knowing who goes next is a foundational safety rule.

Tip to Pass:

  • If you force another driver to brake or hesitate, it’s an automatic failure.
  • Watch out for 4-way stops, yield signs, and merging lanes.
  • When in doubt: Slow down and confirm the behavior of cross-traffic.

Relax — You’ve Got This

A Colorado driving test only takes about 15 minutes. It’s a simple check of the safe habits you already know.

Final Advice:

  • Stay Present: Don’t dwell on a small mistake; keep your focus on the road ahead.
  • Drive with Care: Imagine you are teaching a younger sibling or a friend.
  • Success: With good focus and a complete stop at every sign, you’ll leave with your license in no time!
